Buying potted plants for Fall planting is a wonderful way to get a head start on growth for next Spring. Since soils are warm and rains have (usually) returned, your plants can get some additional root growth and establishment before growing slows down and stops for the Winter.
Planting potted items in Fall is very similar to planting bare root plants in Spring - the main difference is that your hole doesn't need to be as wide.
1. Preparing the Planting Hole
🌱 Dig a hole 12 inches deep and 24 inches wide
💧Thoroughly wet the soil in the hole
🪴 Remove the pot and gently loosen the roots
2. Soil & Placement
🌱Mix 1/3 compost with 2/3 native soil
add a couple inches of this mix to the bottom of the hole
🌱 Place the plant so its soil level matches the soil level of your planting area
Backfill with remaining amended soil
3. Watering & Mulching
💧Water thoroughly to help soil to settle In dry winter locations you might create a basin to catch all available water and concentrate it in the plant's root zone
🪵Apply 3-4 inches of wood chip mulch around the roots
🚫Keep mulch away from the plant's uprights or stems
4. Fertilizer & Care
🚫Do not fertilize until plants leaf out in the spring
💧Water weekly if there's no rain
✅Protect all trunks for the first two winters - using a tree guard or 1/2 inch hardware cloth sleeve
Get ready for your plants to really explode with new growth in the Spring!
